GTA 6 pre-load starts November 10, and Rockstar warns players to clear up to 212GB
Rockstar Games has confirmed the pre-load schedule for Grand Theft Auto VI. Digital pre-orders will become available to download on November 10, while players may need to free up as much as 212GB of storage before the game launches on November 19.
Nine days. That's how much time Rockstar is giving digital buyers to download Grand Theft Auto VI before its November 19 launch. The company confirmed the schedule on November 3, along with a storage requirement substantial enough to make clearing space part of the release preparations.
Rockstar says the pre-load file can require up to 212GB, depending on the device. That figure describes the advance download rather than a confirmed final installation size across every supported console. The distinction matters, especially with launch updates and platform-specific files potentially affecting the amount of storage used.
PlayStation and Xbox follow different clocks
PlayStation 5 owners who have digitally pre-ordered GTA VI can begin downloading it at midnight local time on November 10. Sony recommends checking account settings and enabling automatic downloads ahead of time. A PS5 left in Rest Mode can handle the process if the necessary settings are enabled.
Xbox Series X|S players have a globally synchronized start instead. Their pre-load window opens at 12 a.m. GMT on November 10, regardless of region.
The different schedules won't change the game's official release date. Downloading the files early is intended to reduce the wait on launch day, not provide advance access to Vice City.
Buying a box won't avoid the download
Rockstar also confirmed that code-in-box editions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are expected to reach retailers beginning November 12. These packages contain digital redemption codes rather than game discs.
That makes the physical packaging more of a retail alternative to buying directly through a console storefront. Players will still need to download the game, with the same practical concerns about storage capacity and internet connections.
A large download before a huge launch
Rockstar's announcement does not specify exactly how much storage each console version will occupy after installation. For now, the sensible approach is to follow the published upper pre-load requirement instead of treating 212GB as an independently established final size.

The November 19 release remains scheduled for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has also announced a downloadable, printable version of GTA VI's official cover poster and Leonida map for launch day, with a physical double-sided version planned through its merchandise store.
For anyone intending to play as soon as GTA VI unlocks, November 10 is now the first date that matters. Freeing enough space might take longer than placing the pre-order.
