Half-Life: Alyx gets a new PC VR graphics option more than six years after launch
Half-Life: Alyx is still receiving meaningful technical improvements in 2026. Valve has added a foveated rendering option for PCVR players, potentially reducing graphics workload without changing the game's original campaign.
Half-Life: Alyx launched in March 2020, but Valve is still refining the technology behind its virtual reality adventure. The October 26, 2026 update gives PC players access to an additional rendering option that could improve performance on supported hardware.
The new Foveated Rendering setting appears under Advanced Performance. Its purpose is to avoid spending an equal amount of rendering work across the entire field of view when certain areas can be displayed at reduced detail.
The game remains the same journey through City 17. There are no new campaign missions, enemies or gameplay chapters in this patch.
Foveated rendering comes to desktop VR
Foveated rendering prioritises image detail within selected parts of the player's view. With eye tracking, the higher-quality region can follow the player's actual gaze, potentially allowing the system to reduce work elsewhere.
Valve lists NVIDIA GTX 16-series and RTX 20-series graphics cards or newer as supported under DirectX. AMD users must launch the game using the -vulkan argument.
The studio recommends enabling eye tracking on the headset for the best results. That recommendation does not mean all supported headsets have eye tracking, or that every compatible PC will achieve the same performance improvement.

For a game built around environmental detail and physically interactive objects, any change in rendering priorities needs to preserve a convincing visual experience. Half-Life: Alyx relies heavily on close inspection, hand movement and spatial awareness.
Valve has not published a universal performance uplift or detailed benchmark table for the new desktop setting. The precise benefit remains dependent on the headset, GPU and configuration.
Another improvement for Steam Frame
The same update enables stencil buffer tagging when Half-Life: Alyx runs natively on Steam Frame. Valve says the change is intended to improve reprojection quality.
This follows the much larger September 14 update, which brought standalone Steam Frame gameplay, an ARM64 port, engine optimisation, foveated rendering in standalone mode and depth reprojection.
The October patch therefore extends existing Steam Frame support. It does not mark the first release of the game on Valve's headset.
Workshop stability and achievement fixes
Valve has also addressed several rendering crashes affecting Workshop content. Community-created levels and modifications are an important part of the game's ongoing PC ecosystem, so these fixes extend beyond the original campaign.
The Gnome Alone achievement receives a correction as well. Some players were unable to unlock it under certain circumstances, an issue the new patch is intended to resolve.

Half-Life: Alyx remains a VR-focused title with multiple locomotion options and support for compatible SteamVR hardware. The October 26 patch is available now, with the new desktop rendering option accessible through the advanced performance menu on supported configurations.
