Minecraft lands on Switch 2 with Vibrant Visuals and a free upgrade path
Minecraft arrived on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27, 2026. Existing players can bring their worlds forward, eligible digital Switch owners can upgrade for free, and Vibrant Visuals gives familiar landscapes a striking new appearance.
The most valuable thing in Minecraft might be a world someone started building years ago. Fortunately, the native Nintendo Switch 2 release does not ask returning players to abandon their previous creations. Mojang supports transferring worlds from the original Switch version, making the transition considerably less painful.
The new edition is available now, with Vibrant Visuals providing its most immediately noticeable change. Rather than redesigning Minecraft's block-based environments, this graphics system alters the lighting, shadows, atmosphere and water effects that surround them.
A brighter Overworld
Directional sunlight and dynamic shadows add definition to familiar landscapes. Volumetric fog changes how distant environments appear, while water reflections give rivers and lakes a more convincing relationship with their surroundings.
The fundamental Minecraft aesthetic remains intact. The new rendering system is meant to strengthen its atmosphere, not replace the game's deliberately simple geometry.

There is an important restriction. Vibrant Visuals is the default graphics experience on Switch 2, but it is unavailable during split-screen play and in some Marketplace worlds and content. Families using one console for local multiplayer will not receive the same visual presentation in that mode.
Keeping your old worlds and purchases
For returning digital owners, the upgrade policy is unusually welcome. Players who purchased Minecraft digitally on the original Nintendo Switch can obtain the Switch 2 Standard Edition digitally at no additional cost in most regions, including Europe, through Nintendo eShop.
The free offer is not identical worldwide: Mojang lists small upgrade charges in Japan, Taiwan and Thailand. Owners of physical Switch copies are not covered by the same free digital Standard Edition offer.
There is also a separate discounted upgrade to the digital Ultimate Collection, available to qualifying physical and digital owners who launch their existing game on Switch 2 during the promotion. That offer runs from October 27, 2026, to January 31, 2027, at 9 a.m. Pacific Time.
Players can migrate their existing worlds and continue building rather than starting over. It is a practical feature with far more lasting value than a temporary launch reward.
Mario returns with a visual refresh
Nintendo's exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up Pack is included in the Switch 2 edition, now updated for Vibrant Visuals. Peach's Castle and Delfino Plaza are among the recognisable locations, alongside 40 character skins and 15 music tracks.

The game is sold digitally in Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate configurations. The Deluxe Collection adds themed content, cosmetics and 700 Minecoins. Ultimate includes additional add-ons and increases the Minecoin allocation to 1,000. A physical Standard Edition is available at retail.
Cross-platform multiplayer remains supported with a Microsoft account, while Nintendo Switch Online is required for console online multiplayer. Local split-screen play remains available, even though the enhanced Vibrant Visuals renderer is not supported there.
