Pokémon GO is giving every Trainer a perfect Mewtwo for its 10th anniversary

Pokémon GO has spent a decade teaching players to chase better catches. Its anniversary Mewtwo removes that chase entirely: finish two very small tasks and the encounter comes with maxed-out stats guaranteed.

This is unusually short Research for a Legendary reward

The 10th Anniversary Celebration Timed Research is free and available to Trainers worldwide. There is only one page of tasks. Catching ten Pokémon awards one Master Ball, while powering up Pokémon ten times awards 500 Mewtwo Mega Energy.

Completing the Research leads to Mewtwo. Its stats are guaranteed to be maxed out and the Pokémon comes with a Special Background, so there is no IV lottery attached to the headline reward.

That is a fairly dramatic shortcut by Pokémon GO standards. Perfect Legendary Pokémon are normally the sort of result players remember precisely because the game does not hand them out on command.

The Mega bonus is tied specifically to Mega Mewtwo Y

The anniversary Mewtwo also arrives with the third Mega Level unlocked for Mega Mewtwo Y. Mewtwo's two Mega Evolutions debuted in Pokémon GO during the 2026 GO Fest cycle, with Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y treated as separate forms.

The wording here is worth reading carefully. Pokémon GO explicitly names Mega Mewtwo Y when describing the unlocked third Mega Level. The announcement does not say that Mega Mewtwo X receives the same progression.

Alongside the 500 Mega Energy reward, that makes the Research useful even before considering the perfect stats. The Master Ball is almost a bonus sitting next to the bonus.

September 6 is the deadline that matters

Timed Research does expire. Players must finish the tasks and claim the rewards by Sunday, September 6, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. local time. Leaving it unfinished in the Research menu will not preserve it beyond the deadline.

That date also lands on the second day of Pokémon GO Fest 2026: Mega Finale. Mega Mewtwo X is scheduled for Super Mega Raids on September 5, with Mega Mewtwo Y appearing on September 6. Anyone planning a raid-heavy weekend has a very easy piece of housekeeping to complete first.

Times Square players are the exception

There is one special case. Trainers who caught a Mewtwo during the July 9 in-person Times Square event are set to receive a Mewtwo with different stats and different rewards from the standard anniversary offer.

Pokémon GO has also said that Mewtwo with the Times Square background will become available again at some point in the future, although no return date has been announced.

For everyone else, the anniversary Research is almost comically straightforward: ten catches, ten power-ups, claim everything before September 6.
