Marcus Fenix is finally back at the center of a new Gears of War adventure. Instead of directly continuing the events of Gears 5, The Coalition has returned to the beginning. Gears of War: E-Day is now available on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and Steam, with access through eligible Game Pass plans. Its worldwide launch took place on October 6, following an early-access period that began on October 1 for Premium Edition owners and players with the relevant upgrade.

This is more than a nostalgic detour. Emergence Day is one of the defining catastrophes of the franchise: the moment the Locust erupt from underground and drag humanity into another devastating war. Previous games largely showed the aftermath of that disaster. E-Day places players at the moment everything begins to collapse.

A City Caught in the Collapse

Set fourteen years before the original Gears of War, the story takes place primarily in Kalona. Marcus and Dom have only recently emerged from the Pendulum Wars. Peace finally seems possible, until the ground opens and creatures unlike anything they have encountered begin attacking the population.

The Coalition focuses the campaign on three days of devastation. Rather than covering the entire fall of Sera, it explores the destruction of a single city through the perspective of a small group of soldiers. Kalona is designed to feel like a genuine urban environment, with residential neighborhoods and industrial districts gradually overwhelmed by the invasion.

A New Bravo Squad

Two newcomers join Marcus and Dom: Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes. Mags is a former soldier working at a refinery, while Lucas is a young communications officer. Their presence expands the human perspective of the disaster without pushing the relationship between the franchise's familiar heroes aside.

All four squad members are playable during the campaign. Online cooperative play supports up to four participants, while console players can also use two-player split-screen. The arrangement preserves one of the series' best-loved traditions while making room for its new characters.

Classic Cover Combat With More Freedom

Cover remains essential. Players still need to manage their positioning, expose themselves carefully and react to enemies that become especially dangerous at close range. Movement has nevertheless been modernized, adding more ways to vault, slide and flank opponents.

Weapons and enemies have also been reworked to restore the Locust's threatening presence. The atmosphere draws more heavily on horror and survival, particularly during the early encounters, when the soldiers have yet to understand what has emerged beneath their city.

Although the campaign is primarily linear, Kalona includes larger spaces, alternative routes and optional objectives. Exploration can reveal weapon upgrades and additional details about the invasion.

Horde Siege and Versus Return

The emphasis on the origin story does not mean multiplayer has been left behind. Horde Siege reimagines the series' cooperative survival formula through larger battlefields, character classes and multiple squads tackling shared objectives. Players can adopt roles focused on assault, precision shooting, medical support or close-range combat.

Competitive Versus play also returns with four-versus-four battles, new maps and playlists for both ranked competition and more casual sessions. Online multiplayer on console may require a subscription that includes online play.

Built Again With Unreal Engine 5

The Coalition has rebuilt more than the story's setting. According to the studio, the characters, environments, animation and visual systems were recreated using Unreal Engine 5 rather than simply carrying forward the technical foundations of previous entries. That work supports a more cohesive city and a more oppressive atmosphere.

Microsoft advertises support for 4K presentation and up to 60 frames per second under the relevant technical conditions on Xbox Series X|S. Those advertised capabilities should not be confused with independently measured performance.

For longtime fans, E-Day offers the chance to experience a catastrophe the series has referenced for years. For newcomers, its prequel setting provides a natural starting point. Whether this rebuilt foundation shapes future installments remains to be seen, but the Locust have unquestionably returned to Xbox and PC.
